Project 1 – Packaging : Week 4

Cormack Visitor

His comment towards my design was it is a very unique concept that has not been done. But his advice was that if I have a live- hinge in my design should be in PP instead of PET. The reason is because PP is not as brittle for a live-hinge. He also told us that when we draw the live-hinge on the computer we need to draw it flat open where in real life the machine will be able to mould it and close the lid in the production process.

Tutor Feedback

Scott gave me a lot of feedback on how the bottle and lid is not communicating in one shape. The week before he said that if I can proof the roller concept work with Jam I can continue on with the concept, but this week he criticized that the roller is pointless. Even though my research is on carpal tunnel where users can still use their fingers but his response was that "arthritis" users can not squeeze. He said I should work on the internal of how the jam should be dispensed.

Focus Group
Peers in my group the bottle communicated well of where the bottle should be hold. But because the roller and dispenser is hidden it was hard to define what each side do. Overall they liked the shape and the grip.

It was a new idea for washing powder but the twist per serving might have some technique issue since the technique area was complicated. I like the shape of the bottle where it look more interesting that washing powder design on the market now. But the graphics and final out look need to communicate will that it is washing powder or else it can confuse users.

It was a good direction to work towards changing milk design, but I believe since milk packaging need to be cost efficient it is hard to re-design it. The idea of changing the bottle into a jug shape was nice, but there will be some manufacturing problems and it will not cover the cost of the milk itself.

Process Week 3 - Week 4
     Extra research

Some jar lid on the market are shallow easier to turn
Honey packaging on the market

Jar that are rigid to provide a grip -> edges provides a better grip
New bottle designs on the market are more flat to have a better control on the squeeze; therefore if the bottle is flat allow user to use less force in squeezing the product.

Where curve in design communicates better where the the hand should go

 Experiment

Solid jam into squeeze bottle and see if it dispenses.
The jam in the squeeze jam bottle was in a very liquid state.

Experiment shows the it dispenses the jam out even though it is in semi solid form
Where the jam are also able to roll through a roller without trouble
 Easy flip cap example

 Pre - Model Process

 Glove experiment

It was very difficult to use the glove to open simple flip caps or jars.
