[ Reflection] Don Norman : Emotional Design

"My new life is to understand beauty & emotion" - Don Norman

As I thought industrial design is just to make people's life easier and inventing new
products to life, but there are actually factors in depth that contributes to the process.

Visceral Experience
Within Don Norman's talk of "Emotional Design" that not all products are designed to be
just only for used, but to create bonding between people in society and for beauty. The example of the design winning juicer by Phillipe Stark and the humour that Norman has the Yr 2000 golden collection but as a display at home and comfort for view. It's a strong inspiration and
it changed my view towards industrial design, when I personally thought everything just had to be functional, but in other terms industrial designers can also be artists, communicators and maybe story tellers through their designs.

He also mentioned about being happy than fear allows people to think out of the box and become more productive. As industrial designers it's important to understand this point it's because when working in the field projects would always be in tight schedule, but when designing is always happy and relaxing a more positive product will be created.

Behavioural Experience

"Subconscious" are unintentional ways of thinking and things we do; where people like products that give them control, a sense of safety and signals of emotions to others. It’s important to realise this point for designers because products can pass messages to others and create the psychological side of comfort to it’s users.

The example of the teapot within the talk the interesting part to me was that when there are no tea the user can allow the waitress to know that it needs to be refill. I believe it's a interesting way of how product distribute needs and wants messages without speech but through normal lifestyles. It also shows how much effort designers put in to understand and research before designing any product.

Reflective Experience

Products and brands are always representations of how their users like to presents themselves to others and a present of their personality. Norman mentioned in it’s talk was people don’t always seek for a efficient product be a product that is pretty and the ability to impressive others. Example used was a Digital or a expensive watch. Where people like awareness and present themselves to demonstrate stage within the society or even wealth through products they own. E.g. Sports car and a luxury car

At the end of the day Norman inspire other designers to understand design is about fun and have a positive vibe and not allowing fear to be a barrier of design.
