Rationale

Sinyous Eyelash Curler

Through thorough research and reviews provided by young teenage girls using eyelash curlers, it is obvious that eyelash curlers are becoming tool that cannot be missed in makeup bag, as females get more conscious about their appearance in today’s modern society. From my investigation girls found the look of traditional eyelash curlers very unattractive, and for first time users it clips onto their skin frequently. Also the choice between metal and plastic, metal has a significant better outcome and more durable. While plastic curlers has a flatter curler surface benefits users that uses fake eyelashes. Tradition operation of the curler will damage the makeup which is already on the user’s cheeks and etc, which takes more time to look good than have fun.

Towards my design I aim to make the eyelash curler unique by its side way clip design, keep the use of metal for its material since it’s more durable and efficient. The use of metal also makes its user feel they are superior and elegant, since the material is reflective creates compatibility with perfume bottles etcAddition of curves to the normal handles and its irregular shape creates interest on a girl’s make up table. The head of the curler is also longer and flatter to suit fake eyelashes and users with different eye features. The design inspiration is like the breast cancer foundation’s ribbon which targets back to female target audience and adds ergonomics to the product. Also would like to create conversations between people “guessing” the use of the product, which encourages the mystery of the curler. The curler will be for home use indicating to the user to enjoy the process of putting make up on and bringing out the most of her beauty.

The story of electronics

Surprisingly to know that old products are “designed for the dump” and creating 25 million bump of e-waste each year. The poor thought design material, manufacturing and disposal creates loads of problems such as

Tonic into worker’s health from PVC, solvents, toxic flame retardants leading onto 40% of miscarriages and higher rate of blood, brain and kidney cancer.

Dumping waste into other countries and polluting rivers and villages and creating more green house gas burn what cannot be recycled.

It’s wiser to choose greenest products that designers are well thought of the whole product process, or most parts of the electronic is recycle. So it is important as designers to clearly think about the manufacturing and disposal process because it affects a big amount of people and environment. Therefore design something that is green and that it will last.

The story of bottled water

Manufactured demands are what drive people to buy water, where they make people feel insecure and lack of personal standards.

Firstly companies will “Scare Us” of the danger within tap water and sell how purify bottle water is.

“Seduce Us” with pretty printed packaging but the amount of oil and resources use within the process only delicate us with two minute of need.

After the amount of energy spent to make a bottle and seal water inside, it would be then disposed. Since plastic is not an eco-friendly material, they are usually land filed or burn to create more CO2. Even worst shown in the video was the companies wouldn’t recycle the bottle but dump it into India and polluted the environment there. Which this is “Misleading Us”

Real solution mentioned:

*Invest in public water infrastructure

*Prevent pollution

*Drinking fountains

*Water bottle boycott

There are billions of people without water access and water is an actual need. No point wasting money on something that is accessible, drinkable near you. Better off if you help people for example in Africa with no clean water access and need bottle water for living.

The story of cosmetics

“Women use 20 cosmetic products daily and Men use 6 cosmetic products daily”

It surprise that how many toxic are within our daily products and there are nothing government legislation can do to ban certain chemicals. Leading onto the fact that products are produced by “designers” at the start of the production chain, therefore it is important for designers to think twice or triple of the harms it could do to people when used and not only about the money.

Products are design to benefit people but not to damage our bodies. It’s an issue that our bodies contain lead, triclosan, flame retardants and mercury and where some babies are pre-polluted with the tonic.

The example of Herbal Essential that “Natural”, “Herbal” and organic has no legal definitions which means companies are lying or misleading their consumers. Relating it back to designer it should be clean that we do not mislead consumers for unethical acts. For the tiny amount of money people make now can lead onto damages onto our next generation. Where now is a wakeup call for manufactures and businesses to non-tonic their products to make our lives more safe and healthy.

Why "design?"

Designer a person who devises or executes designs, especially one who creates forms, structures, and patterns, as for works of art or machines.

I wanted to become a designer is because I wanted an interesting and unique career, didn’t really want to follow a family trend for a typical office job. Through-out my life I had interest in drawing, where some believe it is a talent. During senior years of high school I had attempts of not following a dream of being a designer, where I admit I did have regrets. It took awhile to find a challenging and something I’m passionate to do. From then on my aim was to study industrial design and it hasn’t change since Yr 12. But while studying the course now I think this is what I wanted.

An industrial designer to me is like an inventor and a combination of an artist not only the products are designed are pretty but benefits the user. E.g. Design of medical products. Where the diversity of design wouldn’t limit my career into one field of a certain industry but it can change according to different design briefs designers are assigned.

I’ve chosen UNSW is because I believe it’s a better university than any other Industrial design institutional in Sydney. I had offers from institutional like Enmore Tafe etc, but UNSW would allow me to have more hands on skills while working in the actual field in the future. And after the experience at UNSW I have learnt a lot that I didn’t expect industrial designers need to do. I thought design just draw but I also realize they need to make models too. As a girl I havent used any massive tools in my life but after building my first model, it feels awesome! That I can make something and it’s not a man thing anymore.

I’m hoping my future as an industrial design will come true and have serious experience in the industry. I would want to specialize on design in technology and homeware products. But at the meantime I will work as hard as I can to reach towards this goal. It would also be rewarding to make products I will desire to have or maybe seeing others enjoy the use of that product.
